When I read the book, to be honest, I was curious because of the image. There is a fierce African-American female ready to fight, with a blade, superimposed in a space with flowers. How beautiful is that?! The novel is a retelling of Alice in Wonderland in Atlanta, Georgia. How intriguing.... so my curiosity led me to a wonderfully written novel. I fell in love with the main character, Alice. She is a fierce female who has to weather the death of her father, and then, the feelings she has for two of the guys in her life has her heart split. She also has to fight these creatures derived from nightmares (in the dream world). I loved it! The characters are relatable. L.L. McKinney did a wonderful job. Check it out :-)

I give the novel four stars. I loved it, but the cliffhanger and the feeling that there could be so much more development in the story had me wanting more.

This book is a great mix of elements from the original Alice in Wonderland and a completely new universe that is equally interesting and fantastic. I didn't know what to expect, but I wasn't disappointed at all. Appropriate for middle school and up, I enjoyed it as an adult. I look forward to the sequel! WRITE FASTER!
Modern and violent re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland. Rounded characters and plenty of action to keep the story rolling along. If I'd read on paper it would have been obvious the story wasn't going to end here, but the cliff-hanger ending on my took me by surprise--not in a good way. What? We're done? Recommend for YA fantasy fans who're prepared to wait for the sequel(s?).
Currently fangirling so hard over this book. It's pitched as Alice in Wonderland meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer and that is SO ACCURATE. If you love all the weirdness of Carroll's Wonderland, and all the badassery, snarky wit and sneaking-out-of-your-parents'-house-to-go-save-the-world of Buffy, you'll love A Blade So Black. Add in some seriously shippable side characters, an adorable and realistic BFF B-story, and action that will keep you glued to the page through the end, and you've got a recipe for the kind of book that will launch a thousand fanfics.
The world-building felt fluid and well-rounded, and the nods to the original Alice in Wonderland were brilliantly woven into the story without feeling like a rote retelling. My only complaint is I NEED BOOK TWO IMMEDIATELY!
The original Alice in Wonderland is a favorite of mine so I wondered how that would be pulled into a new telling. I enjoyed the little nods (cats named Lewis and Carol, the mention of the original Alice as the first visitor), while also appreciating that this was a new story.

The settings were beautifully described and I liked the concept of the Looking Glass pub, the nightmares, and the characters.

I have a feeling it'll be controversial, but I also appreciated the nods to real-life struggles and concerns, like raising a young black child, police shootings, and the struggles of being a blerd (black nerd) who gets called "Oreo" (because that last was my experience as a biracial child).

I don't usually read YA so the whole checking in with mom thing got a little tiresome, but I get that it was a necessary part of the story and it did add an appropriate conflict for the world as it was built.

The one thing I have to say I didn't like was the ending, which annoyed me because I feel like the reader is left hanging or that the storyline of this book isn't completely resolved. I know there's a second book coming, but it's a personal pet peeve when a story feels unfinished. That being said, I'll probably check out the second book because I kept finding myself thinking about what was happening in this story when I wasn't reading it.

4 stars for an interesting take on one of my favorite stories, with characters and world building that intrigued me enough to finish the book despite the small (personal) issues listed.
A Blade So Black isn't what I expected before reading. I did expect it to be good, but I didn't expect to love this tale as much as I did.
I so much relate to the MC and her mom. I can't tell you how many stories I have read/watched where teens are off "saving the world" with no parents to in sight. I love that Allison's mother holds her accountable. This book made fairy tales fun and inviting. Can not wait for a follow up.

Alice is my kinda girl. I love it that she's not the typical, biracial-looking young black girl. And before anyone cries foul, I gave birth to one. Alice looks like me. I didn't really have anyone like her when I was growing up. She's loud, mouthy, annoying and funny as hell. And that is the charm of this novel.

Imaging having a gateway to Wonderland, getting to kick ass and take names...And then trying to sneak in the house before curfew...which never happens. I swear, it was like listening to my grandmother at times- "Where the HELL you been!?! You know what time it is!?!?"

Ms McKinney has taken the world of Lewis Carroll, complete with the play on names, added a dose of Joss Whedon, with a dash of Kasi Lemmons' fantabulous Eve Batiste (the sass, you know) and have us Alice Kingston - bold, brave, vulnerable and badass. I would have liked a bit more worldbuilding, but then the book would be twice as long. I'm sure we'll get more with book 2. Until then, bravo!
I love fantasy books and this one was awesome! I really loved Alice, who has hair like me, skin like me and a mama like me.
Alice tumbled into a world of nightmares and into a world of service to hold the nightmares back.

This fanfic didn't disappoint me at all. It kept me on edge waiting to read what was going to happen next. The more I read the better it got. There was the hint of attraction between the heroine and heroes. Alice, Hatta, Courtney, Chess, Maddi, the twins, etc., etc. I can't wait to read book 2!
