I'm glad I bought this book and enjoyed it. I do have one complaint about it... the author's writing style does not flow and is not the easiest book to read. He is primarily a scholar and I learned a lot from his book about the social and political times during Jesus' lifetime.
This is an amazing book. It may leave you strongly questioning or rejecting all those Jesus stories you've heard your entire life or it may leave you with a much deeper appreciation/respect for Jesus. The man, Jesus is presented as a Jew and what being a Jew must have meant and required. If you are (or become) an atheist or an agnostic, you come away with a respect for Jesus and his followers that you likely never had. This should be must reading for any thinking person who has a serious interest in religion.
On my 4th re-read
very complex study of the events taking place in the time of Jesus. many accounts of the mastery with which Jesus imparted his teachings to align them with all the prophecies with which he was intimately familiar, determining his great mission. the good news surviving with the formation of his followers into a spiritual movement that, even now, grows greater and more fervent.
I initially read this back in the early 70's and never forgot it. This book gives a historical overview of the life of Jesus, leaving out all the biblical rhetoric and attempting to give the reader a real understanding of how Jesus lived and died. It also gives historical context to why Jesus did what he did and how Christianity began and spread. It also gives new information on how the Bible came to be and who really wrote it and when. I highly recommend this book.
I read this book 50-odd years ago, and am re-reading it now. An interesting variation on the story
of crucifixion/resurrection. Makes you think.
I bought this copy primarily to donate to the apartment complex library! A very thought provoking , may slow down brain aging process.
