I first heard about Jane Addams in a textbook for my Social Work Graduate class. Her book is similar in thought to Jacob Riis How the Other Half Lives. The differences though is in ethnicity. He wrote about the Bowery of New York City, while Addams was in Chicago.Spirit of Youth is a short book of only about 60 pages and 6 chapters. An easy read however the language might be a bit odd for someone used to the modern rhetoric of today's books.
The Spirit of Youth is aptly titled and the majority of the book focuses on the importance of finding children things that can employ them intellectually so that they don't get into trouble. Still very much an important topic in today's society as well. Although in the early 1900's children were forced to work and often did not make it past an eight grade education unless they were from a well to do family.
Addams cites many scientific idea of evolutionary psychology and even a bit of Freud in her arguments debunking many of the popular myths of the time.
In Chapter 3, she discounts the notion that boys who become criminals do so because they are inherently bad, but instead (testosterone filled - modern day perspective) are curious and it is because of this that they fall into a life of crime. Just one small mistake. These ideas make for a great read for anyone who works within the criminal justice system with juveniles. Addams also talks briefly about how these young kids get addicted to cocaine. Probably very shocking for the time and yet very much still an issue within our broader modern society.
While she cites that the young female girls are more interested in going downtown to the shopping districts. Often getting caught up in shoplifting, the vagrant boys find themselves getting into trouble mostly around railroads and hanging out on the docks. Very interesting gender roles that she cites.
Excellent read for people curious about the dark side of life. Urban living in the Victorian era. Fans of History. And the struggles of immigrants, poverty and the like.

I have just read your Spirit of Youth, and think it "simply great." Hard not to cry at certain pages! The fact is, Madam, that you are not like the rest of us, who SEEK the truth and TRY to express it. You INHABIT reality; and when you open your mouth truth can't help being uttered. I think that this book will have a great and vital influence.
excellent book highly recommended
This book uses English that may be hard to read for many people, especially newer generations. Overall, it is a rather insightful book, detailing the hopes and dreads that a woman had for the youth of Chicago in the early 1900's. This, pieced together with the stories that she has to tell about the youth of Chicago, can paint quite a detailed vision of what life must have been like for a young person living in Chicago in the 1900's.
